The size of babies’ head is measured using frontaloccipital (from front to the back of the head). The measurement then can be plotted from time to time on the standard growth charts as one of an inspection routine. It is important to remember that your child’s head will grow over a time so you must always keep an eye of your child development.
Microcephaly refers to the head circumference which is smaller than the usual size and it is more likely to have small brain. The normal head circumference rates are:
2 cm / month (1st three months)
1 cm / month (4 to 6 months)
0.5 cm / month (6 to 12 months)
2 cm / year (12 to 24 month)
Children with secondary microcephaly usually have developed brain except there are some conditions or interference that disturbing the brain growth. These children will have normal head size during birth but after that the size will decrease and causing small head.
