Staging Rectal Cancer
Rectal cancer stages are based on whether the tumor has attacked nearby tissues or the cancer has spread to what parts of the body. Knowing the stage is important in planning treatment. The different stages of rectal cancer are :
Stage 0
The tumor spread to the first layer of the rectal tissues. It is also called carcinoma in situ
Stage I
The tumor spread through the innermost lining of the rectum into the second and third of the layers inside wall of the rectum but not spread outside the rectum
Stage II
The tumor spread through the rectal wall into surrounding tissues but not spread to the lymph nodes
Stage III
The tumor spread to the surrounding lymph nodes, but not spread to other areas of the body
Stage IV
The tumor spread to the other areas of the body such as the lungs and liver
