Back pain

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek care, and in Malaysia it is the problem acupuncture users most often treat. Most back pain improves with time, but it can return, and some people live with it for months.

What causes back pain

In most cases there is no single clear cause. Doctors call this non-specific back pain.

  • Muscle or ligament strain from lifting, twisting or long hours sitting
  • Poor posture, and a weak core or tight hips
  • Wear in the joints and discs of the spine as we age
  • A disc bulge pressing on a nerve (see our pages on sciatica and slipped disc)
  • Stress, which tightens the muscles

What usually helps

Staying gently active usually helps more than bed rest. Short walks, stretching, heat, and changing the way you sit and lift are the basics. Pain medicines and physiotherapy are options your doctor can discuss with you.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine for back pain

At The Tole, neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are offered as a complement to those basics. In the traditional view they aim to ease stiffness and support the flow of Qi and blood in the back.

Research on acupuncture for back pain has shown some short-term pain relief in some studies, and guidelines differ on whether to recommend it. We do not promise a particular result.

Acupuncture and herbal treatment at The Tole

At The Tole, treatment combines neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The Master’s team reviews your history and any medical reports, then recommends acupuncture, herbal preparations, or both. Herbs are prepared for the individual, using natural herbs and the family’s ancestral formulas.

You can walk in during opening hours without an appointment. If you live far away, email your medical reports and we will advise you on herbs and, where suitable, an intensive course of acupuncture. Herbs can be couriered to any country, usually in 3 to 5 working days. See herbs by post.

Common questions

Can acupuncture help with back pain?

Some people find it eases their pain and stiffness, and some studies have found short-term benefit. Results vary from person to person, and guidelines are not all in agreement, so we do not promise an outcome.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the person and how long the pain has been present. The Master’s team will discuss this with you after reviewing your history and any scans or reports.

Should I get a scan first?

Most back pain does not need a scan. If you already have an X-ray or MRI report, please bring it. Your doctor will advise if one is needed.

See a doctor first if

  • Back pain after a fall, accident or blow
  • Pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, or a past history of cancer
  • Numbness around the groin or buttocks, or loss of control of your bladder or bowels. Go to emergency care at once
  • Weakness in a leg, or pain that wakes you at night and does not ease with position
