Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a long-term lung condition that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is usually caused by smoking, but also by long exposure to dust, fumes and smoke. It causes breathlessness and a persistent cough.
Common symptoms
- Breathlessness that gradually worsens
- A cough that lasts for months, with or without phlegm
- Wheeze and chest tightness
- Frequent chest infections
Medical care comes first
Stopping smoking is the single most important step. Doctors prescribe inhalers, offer vaccinations and pulmonary rehabilitation, and use oxygen when needed. A cough lasting more than three weeks needs a medical check, including a chest X-ray.
What The Tole can offer
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be offered as supportive care for comfort, tiredness and general wellbeing alongside your inhalers and medical plan.
We do not claim to repair damaged lungs. Research on acupuncture for breathlessness is limited. Please do not stop inhalers.
Acupuncture and herbal treatment at The Tole
At The Tole, treatment combines neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, in the way developed by our founder, Dato’ Leong Hong Tole. Master Tole is the founder of TheTole neuro acupuncture and TheTole neuro brain powder, and the treatment is based on his own technique and on the family’s ancestral formulas. His team reviews your history and any medical reports, then recommends acupuncture, herbal preparations, or both. Herbs are prepared for the individual, using natural herbs.
Treatment at The Tole is used together with your medical treatment, to support your recovery. We never ask anyone to stop the care their doctor has advised.
You can walk in during opening hours without an appointment. If you live far away, email your medical reports and we will advise you on herbs and, where suitable, an intensive course of acupuncture. Herbs can be couriered to any country, usually in 3 to 5 working days. See herbs by post.
Please consult before you buy. Before you purchase any TheTole herbs, including TheTole neuro brain powder, we recommend consulting Dato’ Tole or his team first, so that you receive the correct prescription for your condition.

Common questions
Can Chinese herbs repair my lungs?
We cannot claim this. Damage to the lungs is not reversible, but treatment can slow decline and ease symptoms.
Does a long cough always mean COPD?
No. Asthma, reflux, infection and other conditions can cause it. A doctor should check a cough lasting over three weeks.
Can you help me stop smoking?
Support such as counselling and medicines works best. Acupuncture is sometimes used as an aid, but evidence is mixed.
See a doctor first if
- Coughing up blood, or unexplained weight loss. See a doctor promptly
- Severe breathlessness, blue lips or confusion. Call 999
- Worsening cough, change in phlegm colour, or fever
- A cough lasting more than three weeks

Traditional Chinese medicine is offered as a complement to, not a replacement for, medical care. Used together with your doctor’s treatment, it aims to support your recovery. Responses vary from person to person, and no particular result can be promised. Please keep your doctor informed about any herbs or treatments you use.
