The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of each ear. Problems with the joint or the muscles around it, called TMJ disorders, can cause pain and trouble chewing or opening your mouth.
What you might notice
- Pain in the jaw, face or around the ear
- Clicking, popping or grating when you open or close your mouth
- Difficulty opening wide, or the jaw feeling stuck
- Headaches or earache without an ear infection
- Tired, tight jaw muscles
Common contributors
- Clenching or grinding the teeth (bruxism), often during sleep
- Stress and tension in the jaw and face
- Injury to the jaw, or arthritis of the joint
- Chewing gum or nails
What usually helps
Soft foods for a while, avoiding gum, warm compresses, gentle jaw stretches and relaxation can help. A dentist can check your bite and may suggest a night guard.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are offered at The Tole as a complement to dental and medical care. They aim to ease muscle tension and pain around the jaw. Some studies suggest acupuncture may reduce TMJ pain, but the research is limited, so we do not promise a particular result.
Acupuncture and herbal treatment at The Tole
At The Tole, treatment combines neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The Master’s team reviews your history and any medical reports, then recommends acupuncture, herbal preparations, or both. Herbs are prepared for the individual, using natural herbs and the family’s ancestral formulas.
You can walk in during opening hours without an appointment. If you live far away, email your medical reports and we will advise you on herbs and, where suitable, an intensive course of acupuncture. Herbs can be couriered to any country, usually in 3 to 5 working days. See herbs by post.
