Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition in women of reproductive age. It can cause irregular periods, excess hair growth, acne and difficulty conceiving, and it is linked to insulin resistance and weight gain.
Common signs
- Irregular, infrequent or absent periods
- Excess hair on the face, chest or abdomen
- Acne and oily skin, or thinning hair on the scalp
- Weight gain, especially around the waist
- Difficulty becoming pregnant
Medical care and lifestyle
Diagnosis is based on symptoms, blood tests and an ultrasound. Healthy eating, regular exercise and even modest weight loss can help restore regular cycles. Doctors may prescribe the contraceptive pill, metformin or fertility medicines.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine as support
At The Tole, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are offered as supportive care alongside medical advice. In the traditional view they aim to help regulate the cycle and support overall balance.
Research on acupuncture for PCOS is mixed, and we do not claim to cure PCOS or guarantee ovulation or pregnancy. Please tell us about any medicines you take, including metformin and the pill.
Acupuncture and herbal treatment at The Tole
At The Tole, treatment combines neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The Master’s team reviews your history and any medical reports, then recommends acupuncture, herbal preparations, or both. Herbs are prepared for the individual, using natural herbs and the family’s ancestral formulas.
You can walk in during opening hours without an appointment. If you live far away, email your medical reports and we will advise you on herbs and, where suitable, an intensive course of acupuncture. Herbs can be couriered to any country, usually in 3 to 5 working days. See herbs by post.
