Hair loss

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Hair loss becomes a concern when you notice thinning, a widening parting, a receding hairline or bald patches. There are many causes, and finding the cause comes first.

Common causes

  • Pattern hair loss (genetic and hormonal), the most common type in men and women
  • Stress, illness or surgery, which can cause shedding a few months later
  • Nutritional gaps, including low iron or low vitamin D
  • Thyroid disease and hormonal changes, including after childbirth or at menopause
  • Autoimmune patchy hair loss (alopecia areata)
  • Some medicines, and tight hairstyles

Medical care

A doctor can check blood tests, the scalp and your history. Treatments such as minoxidil, finasteride (for men) or other medicines may be suggested depending on the cause.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine

At The Tole, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are offered as a complement to medical care. In the traditional view, hair is linked to the health of the blood and kidney essence, and the Master’s team assesses this individually.

Scientific evidence for acupuncture or herbs in hair loss is limited. We do not promise regrowth, and results vary.

Acupuncture and herbal treatment at The Tole

At The Tole, treatment combines neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The Master’s team reviews your history and any medical reports, then recommends acupuncture, herbal preparations, or both. Herbs are prepared for the individual, using natural herbs and the family’s ancestral formulas.

You can walk in during opening hours without an appointment. If you live far away, email your medical reports and we will advise you on herbs and, where suitable, an intensive course of acupuncture. Herbs can be couriered to any country, usually in 3 to 5 working days. See herbs by post.

What to expect at your first visit

  1. Walk in or message us. No appointment is needed during opening hours. You can also send a WhatsApp message first.
  2. Tell us your story. The Master’s team asks about your symptoms and history, and looks at any reports you bring.
  3. Agree a plan. They recommend neuro acupuncture, herbal medicine, or both, and explain what to expect.
  4. Follow up. If you take herbs, we ask you to update us on your progress by email.

Common questions

Will my hair grow back?

It depends on the cause. Shedding after stress or illness often recovers by itself, whereas pattern hair loss tends to continue. We do not promise regrowth.

Can acupuncture or herbs regrow hair?

The evidence is limited. Some people choose them as support for general health and stress, but we do not make regrowth claims.

Should I have blood tests first?

It helps. Low iron, thyroid problems and other conditions can be treated. Bring any results to your visit.

See a doctor first if

  • Sudden or patchy hair loss, or hair coming out in clumps
  • Hair loss with scalp pain, redness, scarring or sores
  • Hair loss with tiredness, weight change, or irregular periods
  • Before starting any herb or hair medicine if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy
