A urinary tract infection (UTI) is usually a bladder infection that causes burning on passing urine, frequent urination and lower abdominal discomfort. Some people get repeated infections. A UTI should be diagnosed and treated by a doctor, who may prescribe antibiotics after a urine test.
What you might notice
- Burning or stinging when passing urine
- Needing to go often, in small amounts
- Cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or lower abdominal pain
- Blood in the urine in some cases
Reducing the chance of recurrence
Drink plenty of water, do not hold urine, pass urine after sex, wipe front to back and ask your doctor about preventive options. Women after menopause may benefit from vaginal oestrogen.
What The Tole can offer
Between infections, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be offered as supportive care. Some small studies suggest acupuncture may reduce repeat infections, but the evidence is limited. We do not treat an active infection and do not replace antibiotics when they are needed.
Acupuncture and herbal treatment at The Tole
At The Tole, treatment combines neuro acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, in the way developed by our founder, Dato’ Leong Hong Tole. Master Tole is the founder of TheTole neuro acupuncture and TheTole neuro brain powder, and the treatment is based on his own technique and on the family’s ancestral formulas. His team reviews your history and any medical reports, then recommends acupuncture, herbal preparations, or both. Herbs are prepared for the individual, using natural herbs.
Treatment at The Tole is used together with your medical treatment, to support your recovery. We never ask anyone to stop the care their doctor has advised.
You can walk in during opening hours without an appointment. If you live far away, email your medical reports and we will advise you on herbs and, where suitable, an intensive course of acupuncture. Herbs can be couriered to any country, usually in 3 to 5 working days. See herbs by post.
Please consult before you buy. Before you purchase any TheTole herbs, including TheTole neuro brain powder, we recommend consulting Dato’ Tole or his team first, so that you receive the correct prescription for your condition.

Common questions
Can herbs replace antibiotics?
No. An active infection needs a doctor’s assessment, because it can spread to the kidneys.
Why do I keep getting UTIs?
Anatomy, hormones, sexual activity and incomplete emptying can all play a part. Your doctor can look for a cause.
Does cranberry juice help?
Some evidence suggests cranberry products may reduce recurrence in some women, but it will not treat an infection.
See a doctor first if
- Fever, chills, or back or flank pain. May be a kidney infection. Urgent
- Blood in the urine, or symptoms that do not clear
- Infections in men or children
- Pregnancy with urinary symptoms
